RK Roofing Goes to Levi's Stadium for Built for the Bay
On September 23, RK Roofing joined trade companies from across the Bay Area at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, for Built for the Bay. The event gave high school students a hands on look at careers in the skilled trades, and we were proud to be part of it.
What Is Built for the Bay?
Built for the Bay is a Trades Day for Bay Area high school students, benefiting the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. Throughout the day, students moved between workshops and booths hosted by companies from many different trades. Each one showed what their work really looks like, so students could see which paths might be a good fit for them.
For many students, it was their first chance to talk with people who build, repair and maintain the places we live and work every day.
Hands On at the RK Roofing Station
At our station, students didn't just hear about roofing; they got to try it. We set up an interactive activity where students practiced placing shingles and nailing them down with a nail gun, just like our crews do on the job.
It was great to watch students go from a little hesitant to confidently lining up their rows. Many of them were surprised by how much precision goes into getting every shingle right.
What Students Learned
Along with the hands on practice, our team walked students through the essentials of roofing:
Why roofs matter: A roof is a building's first line of defense against rain, wind and sun.
How a roof gets installed: The step by step process our crews follow to build a roof that lasts.
Signs a roof needs repair: What to look out for, from damaged or missing shingles to leaks and wear.
Why maintenance matters: How regular care extends a roof's life and prevents costly problems down the road.
Meeting the RK Team and Learning About Apprenticeships
Students had the opportunity to meet members of both our office staff and our crews. They asked great questions about what a typical day looks like, what skills the job takes and how people get started in the industry.
We also shared information about apprenticeships with RK Roofing. An apprenticeship lets you learn the trade on the job, alongside experienced roofers, while building skills for a long term career. For students who enjoy working with their hands and seeing real results at the end of the day, it can be the start of a rewarding career.
A Great Day for Everyone
Built for the Bay was a lot of fun for both the students and the RK team. It was inspiring to see so many young people curious about the trades, and we left the stadium excited about the next generation of builders. Thank you to the 49ers Foundation and everyone who helped make the day possible.
